Destinations > City > Paris
The universal influence of Paris, capital of France, stems certainly from its demographic size (2,1 million inhabitants), its 2000 years of history and the layout of its monuments, but most of all from the immense prestige of France itself – its language, fashion, art, science, thought – in a word its culture, often used as a benchmark. Its name has also been, and for a long time, synonymous with an undisputed capital, with architectural classicism, intense intellectual, scientific and artistic activity, enjoyment of life and liberty. Major crossroads and trading centre, Paris is an important money market, foremost intellectual,
scientific and artistic centre, most important tourist venue in France. It is also one of the great metropolis of the world.

Montmartre one of the last two Parisian villages in existence, the other one being la Butte aux Cailles. Montmartre is famous throughout the world for Sacré-coeur, the Place du Tertre, the Moulin Rouge and the two boulevards at the bottom of the hill: the Bd de Clichy and the Bd Rochechouart. Here, there is nothing of major architectural interest, just more or less well known streets and alleyways, steeped in history and anecdotes.
You will come across mythical places - le Lapin Agile, le Moulin de la Galette, le Bateau Lavoir- many famous artists -Utrillo, Valadon, Van Dongen, Renoir, Dorgelès..- and colourful characters - l'âne Lolo, Poulbot, Aristide Bruant, and even Amélie Poulain- who make or have made Montmartre (18th arrondissement)
Around the rue Mouffetard, between Saint Médard church and la Place de la Contrescarpe, a picturesque and lively district, formerly St Médard village or district. Here, there is nothing of major architectural interest, just more or less well known streets and alleyways, hidden gardens, medieval houses. Here the past is brought to life – the ramparts of Philippe Auguste, the stages of the growth of Paris, and the Middle Ages in general.
